Co-Owner since 2009, Mr. Salm has been working for Benjel for over 10 years. With a great sense of leadership, he has been able to help the business grow while maintaining the company's values established since its foundation . Having worked his way up to the top, he is an example of success and tenacity.

As Commercial Services Director, Mrs. Marcotte’s mandate is ensuring, through her extensive knowledge and capabilities, a professional service that goes beyond our customers’ expectations.

Mrs. Marcotte has substantial experience in the field of science, distinguished by impressive multidisciplines. Indeed, after doctoral studies combining chemistry and microbiology, she worked as a coordinator for a research center dedicated to the biosensor, while leading research projects in the field of biomedical engineering.

Member of Benjel’s team since 2008, Mrs. Marcotte has continued accumulating achievements and knowledge, notably as a result of her mandates, but also by completing an environmental and occupational health graduate certificate at the School of Public Health at Université de Montreal.

Mrs. Marcotte has been at the helm of the sales department at Benjel Chemists Conseil inc. since April 2012. She is responsible for approx. 150 cases annually in commercial and industrial buildings, namely multiplex-type (20 or more units), commercial buildings and industrial hygiene mandates. Her expertise includes a variety of specifications, including:

  • • Mold: legal expertise, latent defects, general assessment, monitoring and control of fungal decontamination work.
  • • Chemical air contaminants: formaldehyde, VOCs, asphalt fumes, printer solvents, HAP, etc..
  • • Gases: Carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NOX), etc..
  • • Dust: total dust, breathable dust, PM10, metals, silica, etc..

Mrs. Marcotte is recognized as an expert witness in court.

Laurent Groux


Laurent Groux, Ph. D, Chemist

Vice-President and Interior Air Quality Expert


As Vice-President and Co-Owner of Benjel, Mr. Groux participates in all strategic, technical and scientific development as well as ensuring that the Experts team and chemistry and microbiology laboratories are functioning well and efficiently.

His varied expertise accumulated over the years has brought him to companies, public buildings and homes across the vast region of Montreal. He has also been called upon as an Expert in the Sherbrooke region, Ottawa-Gatineau region and even the Great North of Québec.

As a chemist for Benjel Chimistes Conseils inc., M. Groux is responsible for approx. 300 cases annually for residential and commercial clients. His expertises include a variety of parameters which include:

  • · Mold : legal expertise, hidden vices, general evaluation, work control, dry rot fungus.
  • · Chemical Air contaminants: Formaldehyde (including MIUF), COV, asphalt fumes, chloroform, glycol, etc.
  • · Gasses: Carbon monoxyde (CO), carbon doxide (CO²) , breathable compressed air, etc.
  • · Dust : total dust, breathable dust, PM10, metals, etc.
  • · Asbestos : vermiculite, fibers in the air, etc.

It is noteworthy to add that the development of many special projects are a big part of his professional career: the study of using nitrogen to fill tires, evaluating the effectiveness of industrial cleaning products, the study of biodegradability, etc.

Mr. Groux is recognized as an expert witness in court.

Joel Rioux


Joël Rioux, B.Sc., Chemist

Interior Air Quality Specialist


Having spent many years in an environmental sciences laboratory, Mr. Rioux has vast experience conducting qualitative and quantitative analyses on a multitude of chemical and biochemical compounds.

Mr. Rioux then pursued his career for an international manufacturer, sharing his opinions and giving approvals in matters of quality and regulations.

As the latest member to join our team of professionals here at Benjel Chimistes Conseils Inc., Mr. Rioux is responsible for approximately 200 cases annually for residential and commercial clients. . His expertises include a variety of parameters, namely:

  • · Mold : legal expertise, hidden vices, general evaluation, work control, Dry rot fungus
  • · Chemical Air contaminants: Formaldehyde (including MIUF), COV, asphalt fumes, chloroform, glycol, etc.
  • · Gasses: Carbon monoxyde (CO), carbon doxide (CO²) , breathable compressed air, etc.

Joel Rioux is a member of l’ordre des chimistes du Québec and is IICRC certified expert for post-water damaged restoration.

Nathalie Bourassa, M.Sc., Mcb.A., Microbiologist

Interior Air Quality Specialist


Mrs. Bourasse joined our team of experts at Benjel Chimistes Conseil Inc. in 2010. She specializes in cases pertaining to mold, more specifically in residential areas, a specialty obtained while studying Applied Microbiology.

Also recognized as an expert witness by the courts, she is responsible for approximately 300 cases annually such as legal expertise, hidden vices, general evaluation, work control, Dry rot fungus , pre-purchasing testing, etc.

She is also in constant evolution, taking part in numerous conferences and training related to her specific field of expertise.

Appreciated for her professionalism and her rigor, Mrs. Bourassa, in each of her cases, gives her all in order to prepare the most accurate portrait possible of the situation to better help the clients make an informed decision.

Alexandre Castan, M.Sc., RMCCM

Accredited Microbiologist


As a microbiologist, Mr. Castan is responsible for the sample analyses and participates in the technical and scientific development of Benjel’s microbiology laboratory.

His academic career brought him to l’Université de Montréal where he completed a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, specializing in microbiology and immunology . He then received a master’s degree in virology and immunology at INRS – Armand-Frappier Institute.

Having successfully completed his studies, Mr. Castan went on to work for a major Canadian company as a laboratory analyst for environmental controls and then joined the Benjel Team.

His technical expertise includes:

  • Identifying mold and their species
  • Mold cultures from swabs, dust and wool insulation
  • Analyzing spore traps

Valérie Hue, B.Sc., RMCCM

Accredited Microbiologist


As a microbiologist, Mrs. Hue is responsible for analyzing samples, ensuring that the daily microbiology activities in the laboratory are conducted with efficiency as well as participating in the technical and scientific development of Benjel’s laboratory.

Having successfully completed her Biological Sciences Bachelor’s degree, specializing in microbiology and immunology, at the Université de Montréal, Mrs. Hue then continued her academic career at the McCrone Research Institute in Chicago, Illinois, USA where she acquired skills in mycology (the study of fungi and molds)as well as dust analyses,

She has actively contributed to the expansion and efficiency of Benjel’s microbiology Laboratory by implementing recognized work and analytical methods and by participating in the AIHA (American Industrial Hygiene Association) proficiency tests.

Her technical expertise includes:

  • Identifying mold and their species
  • Mold cultures from swabs, dust and wool insulation
  • Analyzing spore traps
  • Analyzing dust components
